Road Map from Johannesburg to Durban

Road Map from Johannesburg to Durban

The road map from Johannesburg to Durban is full of exciting places to discover and things to do. Taking the N3 out of the metropolis of Jozi and driving down to the coastal city of Durban will give you a variety of opportunities. The N3 is the main route from Johannesburg (Jozi) to Durban. Its a toll road with five toll plazas situated at Heidelberg, Villiers, Tugela, Mooi River and Marianhill. Keep cash handy for the tolls as only specific cards are accepted.

On your way down the N3 you will pass the small and historical town of Heidelberg. If you appreciate Victorian architecture, you might like to have a wander around the town. If you can, make a trip to the motor museum which was, once upon a time, a railway station. Back on the road youll pass Villiers and then Warden. Look out for the mountains of Lesotho in the distance! A ways down the highway youll reach Harrismith, the halfway point between Johannesburg and Durban.

From Harrismith, the road map from Johannesburg to Durban offers a number of routes into the majestic Drakensberg mountains. If youre visiting South Africa for the first time, a few days in the Berg is mandatory! If youre keen for adventure there is incredible rock climbing, abseiling, and hiking on offer. If you want to relax and enjoy the view there is a vast range of holiday accommodation to choose from. Most resorts offer plenty of sporting and entertainment activities. Each venue has something special, whether it be a beautiful golf course at the foot of the mountain; a turquoise pool with a stunning view or a sparkling lake complete with old fashioned rowboats.

Continuing down the N3 youll pass Ladysmith on the left. History buffs will be in their element with a day or so to spend here. Ladysmith and surrounds is rich in the history of the Anglo Boer War. Dont miss the Siege Museum and the various war memorials. The Spioenkop Dam Nature Reserve is a wonderful place to take a break and enjoy a picnic. The dam is the site of one of the intense battles between the British and the Boers. It offers the double indulgence of watersports and gamespotting all in one reserve.

In Estcourt youll find more intriguing military history and wonderful nature reserves, as well as access to the Drakensberg and the Thukela Biosphere. Bird watchers and hikers alike will relish the trails and birding available. Budding archaeologists might be keen to spend some time in the Wagendrift Nature Reserve which has a lookout point over an exposed fossil bed dating back to the Iron Age.

Mooi River to Hilton is a glorious drive if you head off the N3 and onto the Midlands Meander (R103). The R103 joins up with the N3 again at a later stage. The Midlands Meander is a truly excellent make-it-up-as-you-go-along journey. Set aside a couple of days to enjoy leisurely drives, feast on delicious, farm fresh, homemade meals, and explore the many delightful shops, local crafters and hospitalities on offer.

Check your road map from Johannesburg to Durban to plan your last few stops before you reach your final destination. Pietermaritzburg is a remarkable old city, and the drive from there down to the Highway area (Assagay-Westville) is a pretty one. Stop off in Kloof at the ever-popular Stokers Arms (a railway pub) for a drink. If its Sunday, catch the 1000 Hills Choo Choo up to Bothas Hill. From there, its only half an hour to Durban and the beach
