One of the most daunting tasks for a tourist can be the prospect of driving abroad. That’s why Woodford has put together a helpful list of tips for the traveler visiting South Africa, to ensure that your trip runs smoothly – from the moment you rent one of our vehicles to the time you hand the keys back to one of our friendly staff:
Pre-book your car
The last thing you want to happen is to get off the plane in one of the world’s most beautiful countries and be stranded at the airport. With Woodford’s easy-to-use car rental booking system, you can ensure that the vehicle of your choice (and the one that suits your pocket) is waiting for you when you arrive. Availability can be an issue during busy periods so be sure to book well in advance. The staff at Woodford will advise you on the best options and what documentation is required for hiring a car.
Find your bearings
South Africans drive on the left side of the road. If you happen to come from a country that drives of the opposite side, it might prove helpful to allow yourself the chance to adjust to your hired car by practicing a bit in a quiet area before heading off on your journey. The same can be said of driving a manual car (Woodford Car Hire offers both manual and automatic vehicles) if you aren’t used to it.
Most travelers rely on maps or a GPS system, but it might be useful to have a little more information on your destination. Woodford’s staff will be only too glad to assist with providing directions or hints at the best routes to get to where you’re going. It’s also a plus to know from one of the locals where heavy traffic zones are, which areas might be unsafe, and where you can stop to eat – the type of stuff you won’t find on a GPS navigator.
Get the necessary provisions
South Africa’s climate can be a shock to the system, so if you’re planning a long drive, be sure to stay hydrated and protect yourself from the harsh African sun. Many drivers assume that sunburn and UV damage isn’t an issue while in the car, but it’s best to find a sunscreen with an appropriate sun protection factor (SPF) and apply it whenever you’re outdoors – both inside and outside of the car. Also make sure that you have enough water and provisions. Convenience stores and filling stations are located at regular intervals on the national highways, but the heat can often sap your energy quickly so it’s best to make certain.
Know the tolls
South Africa’s national routes run through a number of toll roads, so find out in advance which tolls you will pass. Enquire about the amounts required for each toll and calculate how much the trip will cost you in toll fees. It helps to keep that amount separate.
The toll stations can also give you with a method of charting your journey. You’d know you’re on the right route based on the landmarks the toll stations provide.
If there’s anything else you need help with, Woodford’s service goes far beyond just providing you with a car for hire. We are also always happy to offer guidance and give you a helping hand!
